Main Street Gourmet co-founder to receive chamber award
Steve Marks, co-CEO of Main Street Gourmet in Akron, will receive the 2012 H. Peter Burg Business Leadership Award. Marks is the eighth recipient of the award, named for the late civic leader and chairman of Akron’s FirstEnergy Corp.Marks, founder of the Akron Marathon running event, will receive the award at the Greater Akron Chamber’s annual meeting March 15 at the John S. Knight Center in downtown Akron.The Burg Business Leadership Award was created by the chamber and Akron Tomorrow trustees.Marks and Harvey Nelson founded Main Street Gourmet — which began in 1987 — as Main Street Muffins. Nelson serves as company co-CEO.The company is an oft-cited local success story, and today, the business is a national wholesaler of bakery items with a payroll of 110 employees and annual sales of more than $20 million.In 2003, Marks founded the Akron Marathon, which attracted nearly 15,000 runners last September.Reservations for the chamber’s meeting should be made by March 8. It is called the Community Leadership Award. Team NEO, a regional nonprofit business-attraction group, also has an annual award named for Burg.
